Quick summary: Another week is in the books out of Lorain, and the walleye just keep cooperating. Phenomenal is the word we keep coming back to — this stretch of Lake Erie is fishing as well as anywhere on the planet right now. The one adjustment that mattered this week: the bait got small, so we went mini.
Where the fish are sitting
The bulk of the biomass continues to stack up over 50 to 60 feet of water. These are classic mid-summer fish — nomadic, keyed in on the bait, and rarely in the same spot two days running. One morning they'll be riding high at 25 feet down, the next they've slid to 45. Wherever the bait schools drift, the walleye are right underneath them, so your job is to find the food first and the fish take care of themselves.
The big change: bait got small, so we went mini
Here's the adjustment that made the week — the baitfish out there have noticeably shrunk. When the forage downsizes, a full-size spoon starts looking out of place, so we shelved the bigger blades and dropped all the way down to mini streak spoons. Matching the hatch made an immediate difference. The smaller profile mirrors exactly what these fish are gorging on right now, and the rods haven't stopped folding since we made the swap.
The program
Delivery hasn't changed: those mini streaks are running behind Tru-Trips and dipsy divers, which lets us cover the whole band of the water column those fish are roaming through. Spread the divers out, stagger the depths, and keep adjusting as the marks move.
Watch your speed — the current is ripping
Fair warning if you're trailering out on your own: the underwater current has been ripping. Your GPS speed and your speed at the ball can be two very different numbers, and a spoon that isn't swimming right isn't getting bit. How the fleet did
Every boat in the Huckeye fleet boxed out every day this week, with most limits wrapped up in the 2 to 3 hour range. The honest truth is the bite has been so fast that we routinely can't keep a full spread in the water — fish are eating the spoons before we can get the next rod set. That's not a complaint. That's Lorain, Ohio right now.
