Quick summary: Another week in the books out of Lorain, and the bite just keeps getting better. Big volumes of walleye are still stacked in 50–60 ft, and the one adjustment that has made a real difference this week is running larger spoons.
Where the fish are holding
The big story remains the huge volume of walleye stacked up in the 50 to 60 foot range. These fish are locked into their typical summer patterns, shifting around daily as they chase the bait schools. Depending on the day, we're marking them anywhere from 25 to 45 feet down in the water column, so staying flexible with your program is key. What worked at 30 down yesterday might need to slide to 40 down today.
What's working: go bigger on the spoons
Our best presentation continues to be spoons run behind Tru-Trips and dipsy divers — but here's the adjustment we've made this week: we're pulling larger spoons. As these summer fish key in on bigger bait, sizing up the spoon has made a noticeable difference in both catch rate and the class of fish coming over the rail.
If you've been running standard-size spoons and the bite has slowed for you, don't be afraid to go big. The bigger profile is getting hammered.
Watch your speed — the current is no joke
The current out there has been extremely strong lately, and I can't stress this enough: a Fish Hawk is worth its weight in gold right now. Surface speed and speed at the ball are two very different numbers with this much water moving, and if your lures aren't pulling at the correct speed down where the fish are, you're going to struggle. Pair that with good electronics that can keep you on active pods of fish, and you're in business.
The results speak for themselves
Every day this week our fleet has been pulling full boat limits, most averaging just 2 to 3 hours. Honestly, most days we can't keep up with the catch rate — we're rarely able to get all of our rods set at any given time before another one's buried. Talk about an amazing fishery we have here in Lorain, Ohio.
