Standard hunts: we hunt what’s in front of us
Our standard Lake Erie waterfowl hunts target the migration — a mixed bag of mallards, gadwall, teal, wood duck, wigeon, pintails, divers, mergansers, and more depending on the day, the weather, and what the migration pushes in. No two days look the same out here, and that’s exactly how we like it.
Species spotlight: the Canvasback
The king of the divers. Long sloping bill, that deep red head, a back so white it glows at 200 yards. Cans show up on Erie in November, and they’re the bird that makes grown men whisper in the blind.
They raft up in the open and they are smart. A can will circle a spread twice from 80 yards up and leave if one decoy looks wrong. That’s why our open-water rigs are big, clean, and set for the wind. ODNR sets a tight limit on cans, so one bull drake is a trophy — treat it that way.
